To clarify, I think that fascism, at least in the early 20th century, grew out of a reaction to democracy and free trade, which destabilize sclerotic, inefficient institutions. Those sclerotic, inefficient institutions fight back by becoming even more sclerotic and inefficient, as well as anti-democratic, anti-free trade, repressive, nationalistic, and violent. This might also explain what is going on in the Middle East and in China.
