US agriculture, which is heavily subsidized by government, isn't a good example of "free trade."

When governments and businesses get in cahoots, that's not free trade. More of a reaction to free trade, I'd say. On the slippery slope to fascism, maybe.

I am not aware of any government which does not in some way protect some businesses.

There may be some somewhere.
