Yes, enormous sensitivity to peer pressure, and the fear of doing or saying the wrong thing is a contributing factor to this pressure cooker. A lot of it is a faulty sense of what life is about, and what are reasonable expectations. After all, a kid should not feel his life is over if he doesn't get into Harvard. He should not be taught to subordinate all other considerations--- love of family, intellectual interests, moral responsibility, personal happiness--- to the quest for money and a flashy house. If you get the house, but are not there for your children when they are growing up; or neglect your spouse; or have a head full of obsolete, task oriented data; or lie, cheat, and steal; or just plain have an ulcer and a propensity for migraines because you cannot take it easy without either several drinks or a sedative, what kind of life is that?
