Just a feeling. In November, 2000, AMD was saying tapeout by the end of the year. There was talk of a SocketA, 0.18 micron bulk Si ClawHammer. In March of that year, they were still talking about sampling in Q401. content.techweb.com

By April, though, they were talking about "aligning" ClawHammer with 0.13 micron SOI... infoworld.com

So something happened during that time. Assuming tapeout in late Dec. 2000 or Jan. 2001, that would mean first silicon in late Feb. or March of 2001. Give them another month or so the evaluate the silicon, and you get the April decision to align with SOI...

Just a guess on my part. Of course other scenarios are likely too.
