RE: "Can you give an example of how certain action in the NAZ or SOX might influence how you trade AMAT? If they tend to trade in lockstep with AMAT ST, what is the point of following them, unless it's an arbitrage play on the infrequent divergences?"

Sam, Watching AMAT move together with general tech (SOX, NAZ, major tech issues) is what is most common. When one or the other stalls or reverses, I check every indicator I'm following as quickly as possible to see if I can determine why, and/or which one might be leading the other. Here's one example: If AMAT and the SOX are both moving up and the SOX then bounces off resistance and reverses while AMAT continues climbing, I'll watch both closely looking to make a play. If the SOX continues to move lower, I may wait for AMAT to stall and then jump in with a short. This assumes there is no AMAT or Semi-Equip sector news on the wire, or other identifiable reason for the divergence. Another example: If AMAT and general tech are moving against one another for an extended period of time during the day, and I cannot determine why, I tend to be cautious. Sometimes it's a missed opportunity, but more often there's a valid reason that I simply do not understand at the time. I could go on and on adding variables and describing examples, but I think you get the drift here.
