To: elmatador who wrote (15854 ) 3/1/2002 1:12:33 AM From: marcos Read Replies (2) | Respond to of 74559 Gold up, bid now at 464.60 - kitco.com ... indian rupees per gramme ... muy chiquitito el mundo, verdad - for evidence of that witness us here, gathered together from all corners of the planet for the purpose of curing our friend Mqurice of his qcom affliction, and not one of us mentioning the fact that the kiwi is a flightless bird, knowing as if by cross-cultural instinct that such a mention would be undiplomatic and a faux pas ... credit cards are mentioned above and our alaskan member Snowshoe says he always paid his off at the end of the month - well hail to thee Snowtacus, but -ahem- i have never had a credit card, ever, not one, and likely never will ... there was a time in the early nineties i felt pressured to do so, for two reasons for which credit cards are useful, nay almost mandatory - 1. changing money while overseas - cards that work through the Interac system are far and away the most efficient method of changing loonies from your account into sterling, kiwi dollars, pesos mexicanos, whatever - but, the debit cards issued by local credit unions here work through the Mastercard or Global Payment system, both fully operable with Interac, so i can hand one to a teller in Ocosingo or Invercargill and get pesos or kiwi direct, with the narrowest of spreads and the smallest of service charges, without paying any interest ever 2. renting cars - almost nowhere can you rent a car without giving a credit card number as a deposit, failing the 'valid credit card' you need near half the value of the car in cash ... well i got around this a number of times, once in Dunedin, Godzone - rented a car for an initial period of two or three weeks, it ended up being over three months at the negotiated rate ... long story, the first car broke down, an economy model, fuel pump went, i fixed it and hobbled back to Dunedin with the parts bill, it had other problems as well but rental guy had no other economy model so he had to give me a sporty six-cylinder Toyota all-wheel-drive thing, very neat car to drive especially at the economy price with which he said he was happy .... well i kept checking back with him every two weeks or so, paying two or three weeks in advance, keeping up the account quite well i thought ...... at the end, washed and waxed the car, cleaned it inside and out at a friend's house [also for a wedding which was on the penultimate day] ... guy was very very happy with his 'canadian' customer - until it came to final bill settlement, in which i had to inform him that the 'credit card' number i had originally given him for 'deposit' was in fact a debit card number for an account which had little or nothing in it, a card which i keep with me solely for the purpose of renting cars where i don't know [and - unspoken - don't trust] the people ...... well you shoulda seen his face, was he livid or what, lol .... very funny scene, he lost all cool in front of a bunch of people hung over from the wedding even though he had been treated fairly thoughout by moi and i was standing right there with cash in hand ready to clear up anything outstanding ... i guess i need a new trick next time in Dunedin, lol Yes a small world - gold up just now, bid has risen to 9203.71 - kitco.com ... rublos rusos por onza fina
