There is a big land shortage here. Most of the remaining land is peat covered, so you have to dig out 5-10 feet of peat and file it with gravel. It is expensive to ship materials in, and labor and insurance costs are high.

The economy is much more diversified than it was during the oil boom years, and the population has grown slowly but steadily for the last ten years. And with the stock market down, I guess we're seeing the same phenomenon as the rest of the country, where homes seem like a safer place to invest.
