Hi, Clappy. My Alaska trip was sometime last century,ca. June,'79. A buddy and I flew up to Anchorage, took the train to Denali Park, and spent almost 3 weeks there.
The entire state was petty much frontier, like seeing the US in 1850. A lot of the towns along the railroad had only the main drag and, if they were lucky, access to the highway. Pretty much isolated during winter, except for the train and bush planes. I still remember the train schedule saying the train stopped at towns A,C, &E on M,W,F, towns B,D,F on Tu, Th, Sat., and stop at town G if you flagged it down.

Saw pretty much all the wildlife but wolves, and we listened to them howling back and forth at the rangers' sled dogs one misty night.

What was it like? If I thought I could stand the cold winters and lack of sunshine, I'd be gone. It was magic.
