What is loud is the NEA, afraid that they will lose their absolute control over the public education system. They are afraid that teachers will lose their current guaranteed lifetime employment. They are afraid that parents will assert their right to control what is being taught in public schools. In short, this is a fight for their lives.

My suggestions for school reform:

1) Bring teachers salaries inline with prevailing industry wage for their skill level. Along with this, establish measurable accountability for teachers and terminate those who do not measure up (same treatment as in corporate job).

2) Primary focus on math, reading, science, history, English, and critical thinking.

3) Eliminate social engineering agendas from schools. Replace the current generation of PC textbooks with accurate and balanced.

4) Demand excellence from students and fail those who will not apply themselves.

5) Remove at least three layers of bureaucracy from the school management. Principals have great leeway and authority in implementation and are held accountable for results. Principals who succeed get generous bonus incentives. Principals who fail get fired.

6) Invest the savings form # 5 in teacher’s salaries, sports, music, and arts.

7) Establish local oversight committees that are 60% parents, 20% teachers, and 20% administrative.
