I dont think the brits actually "brought it back".Rather they(the potatoes) were washed up on shore after a spanish ship was wrecked off the coast. And when the Irish "ran out "of potatoes during the potatoe blight of 1845 and 46 a goodly number of irish( 1,000,000 )took that other boat rowed by Charon across the Styx.
Irish potatoe production 1844 14,862,000 tons
1847 2,046,000 tons

It was said that the Atlantic Ocean exists only because the Irish filled it with their tears! Apparently this was said in connection with the potato blight and Irish famine of 1845/46.
