I'd say that's partly a matter of perception. The actual answer will (or should) seem the simplest, because it is the one which by definition fits all of the circumstances.

In a set sequence of events, if some end can be reached in multiple ways - but some way involve more, or less likely, steps - then most of the times that end is reached it will be by the simplest path. And unless an end is reached multiple times, we may not see the other paths, or their likelihood, or it may be academic anyhow.

But there's probably a mathematical/symbolic way of saying the above, and I'm sure there's a more elegant one <g>
