Opposition Bloc Pledges to Hold Protests Until Musharraf Falls

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP)- Pakistan's main opposition bloc on Friday announced a series of anti-government protests aimed at toppling President Pervez Musharraf from office.
"The removal of Musharraf - the sooner, the better," declared Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan, chief of the All Parties Conference, an alliance of most major political and religious parties. He said the protests would begin March 23, Pakistan's national day, and continue until Musharraf leaves office.

The call comes at a time when the government is struggling to purge the country of extremists. In January, Musharraf banned five militant groups, including two anti-India guerrilla organizations, in the name of combatting terrorism and sectarian violence.

Despite measures taken by Musharraf's government, suspected Sunni Muslim militants fired on Shiite Muslims praying in a mosque near the capital Tuesday, killing 10 worshippers.

"What is the utility of country's intelligence agencies if these killings can't be stopped?" Khan asked at a news conference in the eastern city of Lahore.
