An old money conspiracy? Doubtful. After the Industrial Revolution, at the dawn of the 20th century, we had 100s of automakers. The glut weeded out all but the handful that survived.

A similar excessive enthusiasm occurred with telecoms & FOs now... and many will disappear. It was mostly the greed of zealots that drove the bubble. Uncle Algae added to it with excessive liquidity just before the peak as he tried to ward off Y2K probs, but without that, we'd still have peaked, perhaps a few months later.
