Many people want to have a purpose. If they don't have a purpose they feel insignificant and small. Therefore they create a purpose. Admitting that their purpose is their own creation will render it emotionally unsatisfactory, so they declare that is not simply their purpose, but that of God.

If they left it there it would be just another small self deception, the sort we indulge in every day, but once they have decided that the purpose they've created is actually divine, they often decide that it is incumbent on them as loyal servants of the divine purpose to go out and make sure that everybody else is serving the same purpose.

When that happens things get sloppy.

I hope that makes my initial statement less obscure.

Have fun....
