And why is it that, both before and imrmediately after 9/11, W's #1 expressed defense priority has been Star Wars Redux?

I guess you don't believe that Iran, Iraq, and North Korea are developing long range ballistic missiles, on top of which they can place WMDs?

Personally, one may be able to argue that it's no longer quite as important as it may have been during the cold war, but there are other fringe benefits, namely developing the technology for intercepting fast moving inter-planetary objects such as planet killing meteors and asteroids.

I can't prove it, but I have a belief (hope?) that Star Wars is a cover for developing such a capability without absolutely freaking everyone on this planet out about the possibilities of being struck by one and having civilization wiped out.

But there is little doubt that having such a defense would alter the equation with regard to rogue states trying to intimidate their neighbors. It certainly would entice many nations to wish to enjoy the "cover" of such a defense as well, increasing US prestige.
