To test their faith by seeing if they will keep up the incessant uncritical worship in the face of all manner of undeserved torment of them and their little children?

Pascal's wager? Nothing so elegant. Something more homey.

You just look around at what you see, glance upward to see where the Big Bang is taking you, think about how great emotions are, especially love, whatever part us contains that capacity and however it got there, sit with a dog on your lap and ask how something like that ever came to be, remind yourself that with all your bitching life has really been sweet to you, ask why you feel so good when you do something nice for someone else that doesn't benefit you, listen to something like "On Eagles Wings" by Michael Crawford, eat something you really love, stuff like that ...

Then just ask your gut whether you feel like you live in an existence that is all random chaos with things smashing into each other all the time that could flatten the whole planet at any moment and make dust of you, and that there's no point to any of it, no reason why you were born in the first place, no logical reason to think that tomorrow might be a good day when it might just as well be a horrible one, because no one's running things and its all chance and accidents and madness .... or not.

And then go with your gut.
