As I recall, Saddam tried to cloak himself in his muslim "finest" during Desert Storm, so it doesn't surprise me that he's attempting to try it now.

What Saddam should do, were he really serious about co-opting the religious sects would be to have a "religious epiphany" and claim that Allah spoke directly to him, or something....

Unfortunately, that would mean trying to convince the mullah and religious scholars, or paying them off as the Saudis have done with the Wahhabis.

And since the Wahhabis believe they are the appointed guardians of the holy sites, they will reject any attempt by Saddam to play the religious card and surpass them in authority.. To manage that he would have to cut a deal with the Wahhabis to replace the Saudi Royal family, and I just don't believe he has that kind of pull.

But it creates an interesting scenario.
