2nd grade is also great. The transformation over the summer from first to second is amazing. And their minds are so ready for knowledge. I think 2nd graders are even more enthusiastic for learning than 3rd graders. They start to become a little jaded and cliquish by the end of 3rd grade, and some of the girls can get a bit weepy and hormonal in 3rd- it seems to start so early now.. 2nd and 3rd are both good choices, but make sure your daughters give second grade a look see.

We have very rigorous standards for k to 1st. Children are supposed to be reading by the end of 1st, and reading pretty well. And you cannot get promoted out of second grade (where our standardized testing starts) under our standards unless you can read 90 words per minute and get a certain percentage on the standardized tests.
