He'll require religious backing to do so.. And I just don't believe he has the credentials or enough credibility to convince the mullahs to trust that he would keep any deal he might cut with them, let alone permit them to live once he rose to power.

The Wahabbis obviously have issues with certain Saudi Royals, but many of the clerics are just as corrupt as any of the princes. Imo, Saudi Arabia is the key to whether Saddam (or anyone else) would claim leadership in the Arab world.. And until SA reaches a level of unrest where it's apparent the religious leaders are seeking support from outside forces. And since many of them are all inter-married with the royal family, any unrest will more closely resemble a family feud, than a revolution.
