when you start so low, it is easy to double for quite a while. You still end up with something in the stratosphere even when you start with Merced performance numbers (Doubling every year for 5 years). also is this the same compaq which couldn't see the cpu which was much faster than itanium as it was, which doubled every year during its existence and junked it ? They junked it before McKinley, Madison, etc. were known. Compaq has pulled the plug on Alpha, let the engineers go to Intel. No looking back from that, it's all Itanium. I don't know so much about HP, but they co-designed Itanium.
