One way of cleaning mercury in a laboratory is to drop it down a long glass column of nitric acid.

At the bottom of the column is a stopcock which is opened from time to time to remove the treated mercury.

The mercury is then washed several times by dropping it down another similar column, each time filled with fresh distilled water. The mercury is then dried with paper towels and, if need be, it is placed in a dessicator.
