Archaeology, anthropology, and observation of remaining indigenous peoples all suggest that for the vast majority of human history we lived in small social groupings of a few interrelated clans. The move away from the pack is of relatively recent vintage, and it could be argued that in creating organized "societies" we have simply expanded the pack, some might say to a quite unmanageable degree.
