I'm not surprised at what is happening. Many sins are committed in the mad rush to the top of the bull market. Companies want to keep their stock price up to keep from being taken over, to be able to eat other companies, and to make management stock options lucrative.

One way of doing that is to actually grow the company. But that's a lot of work and not always possible. Cooking the books is often easier.

OK, so this system laid an Enron. Does anybody really believe Communism was better? The Chinese, in order to finally begin the journey out of poverty, have found they have to inject capitalism. (Although, being a dictatorship, they are more likely to ed up with cronyism.) The Vietnamese have started down the same road.

And the country that wrought Enron is economically the strongest in the world.
