I wonder if the Lincoln bedroom has a place to hang a turban now? _________________ Sakhawat Hussain MD Past President, Pakistani American Congress 200 Hundred years ago today (November 1, 1800) John Adams moved into the White House. The race for White House is decided every first Tuesday of November. Since Labor Day (September 4, 2000) lead has changed ìeight timesî between Gore & Bush This has never happened before. The election is so close that no one can call it. Bush is leading in popular voteís contest in all the eight tracking poles but numbers keep changing every day. The Electoral College vote is an enigma. Because the two largest states Florida and New York are in Goreís camp, Bush must win two of the three, i.e. Florida, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Illinois is for now being counted in Goreís camp. For the first time in the US history there is serious possibility that Bush may win the election but loose the White House. As block voters we can play a major role. Or can we? There are 9 million Muslims in the United States. The Political Action Committee of the American Muslim Political Coordination Council (AMPCC-PAC) under the capable leadership of Professor Agha Saeed has endorsed George W. Bush. On the surface this large ìblock voteî should be more than enough to assure Bush a victory. As I mentioned in my previous e-mail as far as Pakistan goes it has only one friend, i.e. Pakistan and it has only one enemy i.e. Pakistan. Here the scenario is lesser of the two evils. In general a Republican president historically has been good for Pakistan. If Gore is going to and is expected to follow the footsteps of Clinton it means more bad news for Pakistan. Many Indian expatriates are on first name basis with Gore and were given the front seat in the first televised debate between Gore & Bush. Our man, Dr. A. Khan in Texas has been working very close to Bush and we can get things done. It seems Colon Powell might be the Secretary of State for Bush and he has friendly relationship with Saudis & Kuwaitis. So what is the problem. For one out of 9 million Muslims only 750,000 are registered voters. I am sure the number eligible to vote is far greater than those registered to vote, yet what counts is those who are registered to vote. That number will shrink if many choose not to vote and will cancel each other if vote. I still think that if we vote in block we can make the difference. In Michigan where Gore is ahead by two points (statistical tie), there are 300,000 to 400,000 Arab Americans. If they vote in block Bush should win Michigan. Florida is hard to figure. The polls which ever Gore says are wrong (showing Gore having 12 points lead) is a jigsaw puzzle and chances are who ever win Florida will be a step closer to winning election. Both Bush and Gore are counting on winning Florida to win the Electoral College. Florida also has a moderate size Pakistani population and a Muslim population and a block Muslim vote can tip it to Bush. Illinois is considered in Goreís column there are at least 30,000 Pakistanis. Kennedy won Illinois by 20,000 votes and that was the difference. Indians in Illinois are heavily in Goreís camp. Other Asians are split. Thus a block Pakistani vote can and would make difference. Thus Bush people should have a special division in its campaign to concentrate on Muslim & Pakistani votes. I had suggested to A. Khan Bush should visit Islamic foundation (mosque) on Friday at Jumma prayers where at least two to three thousand worshipers congregate. To win Electoral College strategists must play a well-calculated chess game. Although there are surprises in other states because of Nader with windfall going to Bush. Nader is very strong in Minnesota, a state that has gone Democratic for last 26 years. Its Governor, Jessie Ventura is third Party candidate and has no sympathy for the Democrats. Bush may end up winning it. Same could happen in Washington State and Oregon. Wisconsin another liberal states where Nader is strong but Bush is just way far behind and Nader will not make a difference. It has also to be seen what effect web sites such as Voteswap.com & votexchange.org will play. The Gore supporters are swapping votes from Nader supporters to give Nader overall 5% vote he needs to get Federal funding for his Green party but swap the votes from the states where Gore is sure to win for those states where race is too tight. For Bush to win a massive block vote effort has to be made by not only Pakistanis but All-American Muslims. A. Khan has suggested all the Cab Drivers to volunteer their services and bring voters to the polling stations. He calls it Dream Caravan. We must all go and vote and take family and friends to vote. The Democrats have taken the help of labor unions and every union office is going to have extra Bank of phones and volunteers to call all registered voters and drive those who can not. We must match this on individual level and community level. Last but not least Bush & Cheney along with Mrs Bush & Mrs Cheney will be here tomorrow (Thursday, November 2) at College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn. At 2:00 p.m. Gates open at 12 noon. You need tickets to get into. I have forwarded Shinae Chungís e-mail on how and where to get tickets. This election is so close that your vote may very well decide who sleeps in the Lincoln bed room for next 4 years. Please vote.amaweb.org
