I hope you wore your bullet proof nylon boots in good health. The idea behind them was that they would not rot. It was also noted that nylon was incredibly tough and resisted nail penetration. Someone got that idea from observing the use of nylon cleats on racing dinghies.

I don't know about those light plastic M16 weapons with high speed 22 "swift" bullets. They could have made them a bit more foul resistant and with sturdier actions. In retrospect I have to say that the 3000 foot per second bullet of the Garand would be superior.

What they should have done is make the Garand rifle with a nylon stock, stamp the action with plastic face silencing, make it blowback and with a flash hider, sound suppressor, hydraulic recoil suppressor and straight in line stock, with aluminum fin floating barrel. Then lighten the round to steel core 140 grains - about 3300 fps. With a thirty shot angled clip - transparent back clip for rounds-left monitoring and 2.5 power large objective scope that thumbweel sighted to hold-on-target upon focus. That would be a hell of an all round weapon. There is in reality no complete soldier's weapon. You would need about 4 weapons. Close in rapid fire and side arm, frag, long sight rifle, and long range MG. (BAR but lighter by 10 pounds) Not to mention light mortar. Don't leave home without a squad and heli resupply.

There is no mention of ham and beans here, but I believe this is because it was a secret weapon confined to special S and D squads.
