Currency traders are expecting more strong US economic data this week but many are sceptical that this will feed through into a stronger dollar.

The key figure of the week will be non-farm payrolls for February. Until recently many had been expecting a further fall in employment. However, after a recent improvement in initial unemployment claims, some economists now expect a small rise in employment.

If these predictions are vindicated by Friday's release, the US labour market will have recovered twice as fast as it did from the recession of the early 1990s.

Recently, however, the dollar has been refusing to respond to strong economic data. Last week it was was largely unmoved by a strong upward revision to GDP figures for the fourth quarter, which showed the economy growing at an annualised 1.4 per cent.
