Thank you and Conciato for your responses to burden of proof issue. I agree that criminal or civil law "burden of proof" language is not appropriate for scientific tests of effectiveness of a drug.

It is interesting, though, that any criminal defense lawyer would think he had his case won if the prosecution admitted that there was a 1 in 20 chance that the defendant was innocent! He would argue that 20 to 1 definitely shows a reasonable doubt. He would argue that, in any random group of a million people (or whatever the population of the city in which the prosecution takes place), this means that there would be 50,000 people as "guilty" of the crime as he was.
