Iron Aluminum Sulfate is a mineral as it was mined in Peru not a strict compound. As such it has variable composition and involves subsitution in lattice work amonst various components. Here are some possible mineral formulae. Millosevichite is (AlFe)2(SO4)3 Mikasaite is also (FeAl)2(SO4)3 Both above minerals use iron III and are not hydrated. The formulae are correct. They appear charge imbalanced I will admit. What one may ask is: are there natural minerals that are hydrated that contain this formula with various waters of hydration from 9H2O to X H2O? Alunite is Al2(SO4)3.17H2O Coqiumbite is Fe2(SO4)3.9H2O where Fe is FE III. Could Fe and Al have equal parts if Fe were FE III? Possibly. **************** Louderbackite 2FeO.3(Fe,Al)2O3.10SO3·35(H2O There are also minerals like Beaverite that has the formula lead, copper, iron aluminum sulfate or deitrichite which is hydrated zinc,iron maganese aluminum sulfate, or halotrichite which is hydrated iron aluminum sulfate of the form Fe.Al2(SO4)4.22H2O More likely the salts they used were complex mixtures of hydrated sulfates of various kinds and replacement lattice hydrated salts of less common minerals with fe al being the dominant metal species. On the other hand some fe-al hydroxy sulfates may fit the bill. When one tries to make alum or aluminum sulfate one gets iron as an impurity. You can buy iron aluminum sulfate that is probably named such as it is more correct to name it that. EC<:-}
