One of the nice things about running a small hedge fund with no institutional investors is that you get good feedback from your clients about the real world, as opposed to people screaming at your for daily performance numbers. And one such client tells me he's seeing ad bookings for the second half of 2002 getting better. "Not just talk -- they're actually booking it," he says.

We have owned McClatchy (MNI:NYSE) as a well-run takeover candidate for some years, and the stock is up on a spike that is hard to explain relative to even recovery levels of earnings. I wouldn't buy it here.

But we are now buying New York Times (NYT:NYSE), which is not a takeover candidate but should benefit from the same trends. The company has been an active buyer of its own stock in the low $40s, which limits downside. "
