If Israel's plan for survival in the Middle East is to hope for a Palestinian leader who is suicidal and bent on being reviled both now and in the future

'reviled in many quarters' is not the same thing as being 'reviled now and in the future'. If the course had dangers, it also had real rewards, like a real state with lots of American payola and a prosperous people, who presumably would not have reviled their leadership for their prosperity. Instead, they now have a great suppurating sense of grievance and no real hopes for a state. Again, the constrast with Jordan is instructive. King Abdullah rules exactly the same population as Yasser Arafat (Jordan is 80% Palestinian); he's just managed to lead them to a different place.
