"I don't think that belief can be communicated to someone who does not come by it naturally. It always looks like superstition or neediness or blind acceptance."

Absolutely. Then there is coersion. Unfortunately there are many ways to coerce acceptance, some of them quite covert and incidious. I would much rather deal with agnostics who are honest about it than cowardly hypocrites succumbing to coersion.

However, coming by it naturally is a tough condition. I believe we do come by it naturally in our infant innocence state. The world through its tendency to complicate and cause disorder in our lives makes the issue complex (especially when threatening some harbored pleasure). So, I don't think nature all by itself is sufficient. Add the need to seek righteousness for righteousness sake in there and you may have something. Why would anyone do that? Sorry, I don't know?

Maybe it's a lot like not being able to carry a tune. When I was in grade school, I was so tone deaf that our music teacher told me just to move my mouth when our class was singing on stage before parents.

Seeing as how I remember that all these years later, it shows how much it affected me. (Maybe that's why I find myself dissembling now, as I mentioned to Poet).

JC ;-)

And I will concur with your concurrences. :-)

With a few additions. Getting back to Jewel's post:
Most of the billions of believers in the world are sensible people in their everyday comings and goings. The extremists are few and far between, however quite visible. I do not consider fanatics and extremists as sensible people so this discussion is not about that. Your question should be, how can people who appear sensible in most ways believe in God.
And that statement also applies to the great majority of non-believers.

And I would like to suggest you can do that "triangulation" and STILL not arrive at faith.
Looking back at your post, I believe you would concur with that.
