By that logic we might just as well embrace whatever orgiastic consumption of resources "civilization" deems necessary to put a smile on our collective face. You remind of my country's far sighted Vice (pun intended) President who condescends to acknowledge that there is "some virtue" in conservation.

Yes, comets will come, climate will change with our without human impact, the sun will eventually embrace us in it's killing plasma. Meanwhile, it is our responsibility to make sure that there the soil we till is and the water we use to sustain ourselves are clean. It is our job to think about the future impact of paving and smelting and harvesting.
