German stock market watchdog probes possible insider trading at Infineon
Monday March 4, 6:52 PM

The German stock market watchdog, BAWe, is investigating whether any shareholders of Infineon had knowledge of a heavy third-quarter loss at the company before the results were officially published, a spokeswoman for BAWe said.

At the current stage, the probe was not directed "against either the group or any persons in particular," the spokeswoman insisted.

Infineon announced on June 20 it expected to post a pretax loss of 600 million euros (522 million dollars) in the third quarter. The announcement sparked a heavy sell-off of Infineon shares, pushing the price below 35 euros for the first time.

BAWe wanted to make sure there were no irregularities after a number of "strange" movements were noted, the spokeswoman said.

The investigation could take "several weeks or several months."

A spokeswoman for Infineon, quizzed by the weekly newsmagazine Der Spiegel, rejected the allegations.
