Chartered, ST Assembly Shares Rise on Improving Prospects

Singapore, March 5 (Bloomberg) -- Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. and ST Assembly Test Services Ltd. shares rose on expectations that prospects for Singapore's two biggest chip companies are improving. Chartered, the third-largest maker of chips for brand name companies, said Friday its losses in the first quarter would be at the narrower end of its estimates. ST Assembly, Asia's second-largest chip tester, gained on expectations prices for chip testing and packaging services will rise with increasing demand. Chartered shares rose as much as 22 cents, or 4.6 percent, to S$5.00. ST Assembly shares rose as much as 10 cents, or 3.8 percent, to S$2.71.
