Lamentably,
I think that reading forces the reader to divert his eyes to the visually uninteresting task of parsing letters. This is a major cutback on the flow of new information to the brain. What is left is the content of what is being read along with the internal conversations that make sense of it all. By reducing overall stimulation the reader makes better use of the stimulation provided by the text. With radio and TV the information is primarily audio and this leaves the visual field too busy which keeps the brain busy sorting out images instead of comprehending the content.
