OK. By "old software" you mean the products available in the market at the time. And SPEC is run about as SuperPi? <g> I believe SPEC is a good indicator of potential performance for applications which warrant the investment in optimizations -- the applications which themselves warrant investment in top of the line components.

Your original post said upon introduction (not subsequent software). I will accept the SPEC scores but feel your initial statement was a little too broad and conclusive.

As the processors advanced to 1GHz and AMD lowered the cache clock ratio Coppermines did improve their relative position but not to one of complete superiority.

Of course, no one could actually find a 1GHz CuLaterMine.
