Aether Systems Inc. announced yesterday that it laid off 225 people, or a quarter of its staff, in a third major round of layoffs that indicate the wireless-software company is still trying to find its footing amid a worsening telecommunications market.

Of those laid off, 85 people worked out of Aether's McLean offices and 56 worked out of its Owings Mills, Md., corporate headquarters. The company expects the cuts to decrease its annual costs by $24 million to $32 million a year. The company now employs about 650 people, down from its high of about 1,400 in early 2001.

In addition to the layoffs, which occurred Friday, the company will consolidate facilities and restructure its money-losing European operation, Sila Communications. The company expects to take an $11 million charge during the first quarter of this year as a result of the latest restructuring.
