Billings Lake, Mid August

The morning heat was broken
by a thunderstorm that patted
puffs of steam from the flattened
grass, leaving the air drowsy

with relief. We slid the boat
into the water, dropped oars
in their locks and rowed toward
the center, each pull scrolling

black water into a cello's
double s's. The plink
of water as it dripped
off the oars: twenty years

of noisy dinners, his knowing
wink above the children's heads
a promise we'd find rest.
We stopped at a small island,

looped a line over a low branch
and drank our wine, barely
chilled. There were blueberries
laden and leaning toward

the black mirror, falling
without timbre as we picked
noticing the indigo they marked us with,
as ink stains the hands of composers.
