STOCKHOLM (AFX) - Sony Ericsson's new handset portfolio unveiled earlier this week continues Ericsson's ill-judged obsession with technology, and show the new joint venture company has been forced backwards into a strategy of focusing on comparatively small niche markets, said JP Morgan, according to Direkt.

"In order to build share Sony Ericsson has been forced to back into a strategy of focusing on niche markets. New phones for the tri-band CDMA and GAIT markets, whilst tapping into growth subscriber markets are comparatively small we feel in the near term," said JP Morgan adding that it remains sceptical about MMS deployment, and forecasts very small volumes for Sony-Ericsson's new MMS capable T68i handset over the next 12 months, reported Direkt.

JP Morgan said it is also concerned the new phones signify that Ericsson is continuing its obsession with technology, which JP views as ill-judged. The investment bank pointed out that Nokia increased its market share in the fourth quarter despite having few tech-intensive handsets in its portfolio, reported Direkt.

At 9.40 am, shares in Ericsson B where down 0.4 skr or 0.8 pct at 49.60 skr bid, while Stockholmsboersen All Share was down 0.66 pts 0r 0.28 pct at 238.27
