As the article points out, the insurers are balking at the magnitude of the problem. Surely the bulk of settlements will come from parishoners in one form or another, especially if the tally gets into the multi-billions. Rome might have to kick in too. That is, if they aren't bracing for an onslaught from other countries.

I'm sure that all diocese are going through their files and handing over as much information on past offenses as they can find. So far, Maine, N.H., Chicago...have put any priest with any charges on leave of absence. After being appalled, and then angry, and feeling such sadness that anyone would ever hurt a child let alone a man who preaches right from wrong!...I am left with many questions:

1. What is the percentage of pedophiles in our society? and then in the Catholic Church?

2. How many of these men are homosexual in orientation?

3. Does the celibate life attract men with a disposition to pedophilia? or does it promote this horrific behavior?

4. Why aren't we all required to be mandated reporters for child abuse and neglect? People in the medical profession, in education, social work are mandated to report...why not all of us?

5. How can we be sure that the constitutional rights of individual priests be protected when they are all being painted with a guilty brush even before the evidence is disclosed?

6. How many of these cases are trumped up charges to attack the church, or make a personal financial gain?

7. Isn't it now time for the church to recognize the value of married priests and woman as priests?

I have tons of questions...and I'm looking for the answers. In the meantime, I want all guilty priests prosecuted to the limit! and all innocent priests, given the respect that they deserve.

The Catholic church will survive this horrible scandal and I do believe it will come out stronger. But in the meantime, I will pray for the innocent children who were scarred, and the innocent priests who are ashamed to now wear their collar. I will not damn the guilty; the state will, hopefully, lock them up forever and God has a place
waiting for them.
