When economist Diane Swonk was on a panel recently, they were talking about if this had been a recession and how severe it had been. The panelists were going back and forth on the question of recesion and she had a great comment.

She said what ever this had been it was certainly not a pronounced downturn.

she had lived in Detroit when unemployment had been North of 20% in previous recessions. It was a cogent point, in that unemployment increases have been pretty muted compared to some of our prior economic downturns.
