I responded to Tony's "So because it's old news, it's not bad news?". The point was that there is no such thing us bad old news because if it is old it not a news anymore.
re: Intel can always take iTanium slow and develop a x86-64 chip in the meantime....
They can not, if they take their time to do it then it would never justify development cost or even additional maintenance cost.
I have no experience with hardware but as you know the rule of thumb for "state of the art" software development is that if it is not off the ground within 2-3 years then kill it or hide it. I suspect that there is a similar rule for hardware development as well.
