Surely they just bung a couple more stages onto the pipeline to handle the increased complexity :^) Shouldn't reduce the throughput because you don't have the problems with branch prediction on a FAB production line.

Ah, good joke, good humor, but actually, not so. I just spent quite a bit of time with our IE's going over the capacity model, and if you have extra Metal Layers vs. your old process, then the tools that you have, need to be used for a time, for those extra layers instead of being used during that time to process the previous layers they would have otherwise been used for. The additional processing doesn't come free. Either you need to buy additional process tools, or else, eat the extra capacity needed by lowering your throughput.
