wbmw,

"Plan B" is not a fact. It is a rumor

Well, it's a strong rumor. It has a code name, employees assigned to it, even ex-employees. Jim Carlson, HP's IA-64 chief talks about it, as was reported here: theregister.co.uk

He says:
Yamhill is one of many projects intended to give life to x86, HP's Jim Carlson tells us, but it leaves breathing room for Itanium.

Yamhill is Intel's skunkworks effort to add 64bit instructions to the x86 line. Jim is product marketing chief for IA-64 at HP, and IA-64 is Intel's multi-billion dollar, long-term successor to x86. But Jim didn't flinch from tackling our Yamhill questions head on.

"Yamhill is where Intel is working on the IA-32 line; they expect to have good returns for 8-10 years; they have 6 or 7 projects to give the IA-32 line a long life."

"They may do Yamhill if AMD becomes a threat to them - they're very paranoid," he says....

BTW, this was said at Intel's IDF last week. That's pretty official to be a rumor, what do you think?

and it's only believable because so many people (like you) figure that IA-64 will fail.

Are you saying that the project Yamhill does not exist, accounts of it are not believable, and you don't know anything about it? It is a little surprising, because on other subjects, you are like an encyclopedia of Intel related facts (once they have an official seal of approval).

Joe

wbmw, re: "so many people (like you) figure that IA-64 will fail"

I think IA-64 is clearly targeted towards a distinct (and non-desktop) market that should remain distinct from the 64-bit desktop architectures (x86-64 and possible Yamhill) which will be "burdened" with compatibility with the legacy of x86. IA-64 has shown indications of significant scaling with the 2nd generation with future generations promising more.

What are the real competitors for the high-end server market? Alpha will retire from the field. Since PA-RISC is provided by a member of the IA-64 team (HP) it seems to have a more limited future. IBM has Power4 but it seems like there are not a lot of other architectures (Ultra-SPARC, others?). This might be slightly OT to this thread but a brief recap by someone of the current and prospective players in this market would be appreciated.

EDIT: Again, I must read first! Thanks for some comments in a prior post.
