TOKYO, March 6 Asia Pulse - Japan's gross domestic product grew 1.9 per cent from the preceding month in January, on a price-fluctuation adjusted basis, the Japan Center for Economic Research said in its preliminary report compiled on Tuesday.
The first positive month-on-month GDP growth in three months is attributed to an increase in consumer spending and exports.

Among the items covered in the projection, exports enjoyed a substantial 6.1 per cent growth due to progress in inventory adjustments at information technology-related concerns.

On a volume basis, exports to other Asian nations jumped 16.1 per cent. Exports to the U.S. rose 5.1 per cent, thanks mainly to brisk auto exports.

Consumer spending rose 2.9 per cent, and together with a 0.6 per cent rise in housing investment, private sector spending increased GDP by 1.3 points.

Taiwan's fear of mainland's IC industry exaggerated

Taiwan's fears regarding mainland China's rising semiconductor industry are overexaggerated, according to analysts.

Mainland does not represent a major threat.

While many of the island's foundries are upgrading to 300mm wafers, allowing for production of a greater number of chips as well as more advanced and integrated ones, mainland China's companies continue to look at the previous generation 200mm wafers.

With the two sides competing in different markets, Taiwan's government may start to allow local chip industries to invest across the strait, a sector that until now was off-limits, by the end of the month, local Chinese media have reported.

News that Taiwan companies may soon be able to start investing in mainland semiconductor foundries, and even testing and packaging companies, drew mixed responses from the local sector.
