Keith,

<< GSM1X is not an overlay or a replacement. It is a dual mode system that uses both GSM network BTS & air interface and 1X network BTS and air interface. >>

Well, that is accurate in a general sense, but GSM1x is, or will be when it finishes standardization and commercialization) a network overlay.

As Qualcomm states in their GSM1x brochure "GSM1x has been designed to overlay an existing GSM network with no impact to current operations."

It serves one primary purpose and that is to migrate a GSM network to 1xRTT over time, while allowing core network reuse by keeping the GSM network subsystem and the components there of (MSC, HLR, VLR, AuC, etc.) and peripheral platforms (billing, OTA, messaging) intact. Alternatively it could be used to increase network capacity on an interim basis with an alternative air interface.

GSM1X is not an overlay or a replacement. ??? Right and Wrong.

In my mind the most important factor in the adaption of GSM1x is the ability of a service providor to scale up their core network to simultaneously provide two air interfaces. Maybe, folks more attuned to these technicalities can fire up a discussion in that area. Factors to consider, could be:

1) Split Complexity - RAN identifiers
2) Volume Increases - load balancing
3) Ran (1x) to Ran (GSM) - core optimization opportunity
4) Data (1x/GPRS) - supportive or more problematic
5) Billing - another component or another system

GSM1x - A "simple" in picture backed by a "million" of words.

Keith,

sometime you should get a technical degree...I know you mean well but....

GSM1x IS an overlay. What your describing is just dual mode handsets which can roam between cdma1x and gsm..

GSM1x is when the GSM guys put in overlay basestations to increase THIER network capacity to use CDMA2000 INSTEAD of GSM over the air.

(read your last few posts and NONE of them are technical even close to true). GSM has no 1.25 Mhz carrier, but rather alot of little carriers in a narrow band, each one is a total channel, like 30 kHz.)

Suggest you read and understand some of the good information on the thread over the last month.
