I bought a high-end desktop from Dell last week. RDRAM. I don't think DDR was offered.

With regard to the general issue of PC sales. I didn't think my new machine, Windows XP os, or the application software upgrades would be as big an improvement as they have been. I'd primarily been using a Dell laptop that was high-end when I bought it 2 1/2 years ago. I've been an agnostic lately on the subject of the need to upgrade PC's, but I didn't know what I was missing. This recent experience is telling me that despite the lack of the so-called killer ap, technology has nonetheless marched on, and there is still a great deal of productivity improvements one can get from upgrading. The PC ain't dead yet.

On the other hand, Dell clearly has excess capacity. I ordered on line. Was quoted a two week shipping date. They actually built it and shipped it the next day. They provided strong incentives incl cash back and free upgrades etc. As a consumer I was overjoyed with a great deal & purchasing experience. As a Dell shareholder, I could wish that their backlog was a little bigger and that they didn't have to sell so hard. But I'm confident that there's plenty of pent-up demand out there and that PC sales are going to increase quite nicely going forward. For Dell anyway. I wouldn't bet on the others.

FWIW.

Ian,

I don't think that INTC will have a chipset supporting DDR on P4s before 2H2002

Thank you, I stand corrected; I was jumping the gun.

Brian

Ian,

I thought I saw an ad for DDR chipsets from INTC:

Intel® 850 chipset for RDRAM performance, or Intel® 845 chipset with DDR200/266 or PC133 SDRAM for a strong balance between performance and features.
