Joe, my solution would be a rating that consists of two numbers. One would rate the system's performance on business apps, including so-called content-creation apps. The other would rate system's performance on high-end tasks, including games. Then this standard two-number rating would be used to rate the performance of each SYSTEM on display at Circuit City/Best Buy/Fry's/Costco.

I believe such a solution will put the correct emphasis on system performance without ignoring the processor's role in the big picture. But is such a solution likely to be implemented? I doubt it. Intel is too addicted to GHz, while AMD can't resist the temptation to continue with "QuantiSpeed."
