Lines definitely have to be drawn in a responsible society to afford protection to persons who could be vulnerable to abusive treatment. The guidelines I reported or similar ones would seem reasonable for the examples you gave. That leaves a huge grey area for sensible and responsible parents to consider when applying discipline.

Ironically the principle of responsibility and choice is not consistently represented from one issue to another in our culture...to doggone many agendas need to be served.

Go by the old 'rule of thumb'.
No man may beat his wife with a rod any thicker than his thumb at the first joint.

Which must really have hurt if the man had big hands, or indeed arthritis...

and that was presumably the size of rod referred to the 'spare the rod' phrase. Ouch.
