My belief is that 64-bit support for Hammer will be limited, if not non-existent Oh, come on. It's obvious that all the Free Unixes will be running it 64-bit within weeks of its going on sale. Remember that almost all the code is portable, and the toolchain is finished, so it's just a recompile. All you need are the Linux distros come out with 64-bit Hammer support for everyone with a Hammer to be 64-bit. The *BSDs will be little more than a "make world; make install" and a reboot. (If you don't know what that means, you don't know what you're missing). You could even easily get 64-bit stuff just by recompiling and installing whichever apps one by one, under a 64-bit Linux, which is also just a recompile and reboot. It's alredy done for Mips, Alpha, Ultrasparc etc. There's no reason it won't be for Hammer. When the free Unixes are fully 64-bit on Hammer, Bill will be feeling the pressure to get there too. I bet you see everything free on 64 bit Hammer, and a 64 bit Windows, within 6 months of a hammer release. Neil.
